Eleven - "I cannot risk being taken"

Nahtan touched his link with Renato, the big warhorse shifted his weight, anxious to run. The Dwellers’ horse knew what the armor and barding meant. He knew what the rows of men behind them meant. He'd been bred and trained for war, and it was what he loved. Asher glanced at the black horse, shaking his head.

"That 'orse gets entirely too excited 'bout these things," he said, his Olorun accent seeming a bit heavier than usual. Nahtan was sure it was because they'd be starting this fight at night, something they usually avoided just because of the risk.

They'd finally gotten word that Esmail sabotaged the wine stores and the barrels taken to the main compound and distributed widely enough he felt their numbers should be about even now. Safit had been methodically working his way through the compound, disguised as a follower, weakening structures, moving flammable items into positions where the archers could hit them once they secured the west wall, and making sure the wine from Esmail wasn't discovered before it was all consumed. Arnau had found his father and was staying with him, making sure Macsel stayed fed and had plenty of water so he'd be able to fight once they needed him to.

Emraan suggested allowing at least a few days for the wine to start to take effect, and they'd gotten reports that people were starting to respond to it. They were seeming more confused, unsure of what was going on and having problems keeping focused. Normal tasks were taking longer than usual and there were a few arguments breaking out.

They knew they needed to move now before it became suspicious and the wine was discovered as the cause. They'd moved the Olorun and Aelmeran armies to the hills south of the compound, using the caverns to protect them from the heat as the days wore on. Nahtan used the time to scout the area, finding the second compound where Esmail had gone. Inacia and Hun-Ki sometimes accompanied him and he found himself impressed with their hunting and tracking ability, though more than once he spotted trails she missed.

Valry had sent Nahtan the message from Leneth about Linah and he'd relayed it to everyone else. There had been shock that Aduran would go that far, but not to Nahtan. He was torn, and he knew Garren was especially. Linah was their sister, and even if they agreed she should die, they would still be killing a member of their family.

But she had tortured Valry, and Nahtan couldn't excuse that. His daughter still limped every winter because of what they'd done to her. He didn't particularly care what other blood Linah had on her hands, Nahtan knew he could easily kill her just for what she'd done to Valry.

"He loves the charge," Nahtan said, reaching forward to pat Renato's neck. "I take it Emraan and Lecianne aren't going in with us?"

Asher shook his head. "Lecianne's not got the strength for a fight anymore," he said.
